Normally, I don’t mix business with pleasure, but I had such a remarkable experience I had to share.
This past weekend, I had a girl’s night with my friends from my multiple moms group. There were eight of us all psyched up to be sans children for 24 hours, and since we were in a town not familiar to any of us, we googled a restaurant and found Social Urban Bar.
Upon being seated, our waiter, Billy, gave us a friendly greeting and asked if we had been here before. Pretty typical of a waiter, right? Well, the evening changed as soon as food came out, that none of us had ordered! When Billy came back and we asked about it, he simply said, don’t worry there’s more coming. And more did come, and everything was delicious, but that’s not really what I want to talk about.
In between plates being brought to our table, Billy came by to make sure we were satisfied, joked around with us, and really became more of a host to our party than your typical waiter. I honestly don’t recall ever thinking of any waitstaff I’ve met as a host instead of a server. At one point Billy even commented when he sees customers that want to have a good time, he makes sure he joins them.
To top off the evening we were never charged for our food, only our drinks. All of us were absolutely astounded by this. So besides leaving a generous tip and eagerly filling out their comment cards, we’ve all posted on Facebook and proceeded to tell all our other friends about this place. This wasn’t just dinner at some local joint, it was a dining experience.
My point in telling you this story, is you should start thinking about how you are remarkable at what you do. I’m not promoting you give your product away for free, although samples help sell. I’m challenging you to think about the way you interact with your customers or colleagues, directly or indirectly. What can you do that will make them want to talk about you to others?
