Five Things To Do To Love Your Job Again

We’ve all been there. You suddenly, or maybe not so suddenly, dread going into the office on Monday. You feel burnt out, and have lost that spark that used to make you excited about job. So, how can you rekindle your flame?

1. Take a vacation

Why does it seem like a badge of honor to state, “Oh, I never take all my vacation days.” Your brain needs a mental break, so use the vacation you’re entitled to. And, when you are on vacation, leave your laptop at home. Answering emails, is not being on vacation.

2. Ask for a new assignment

Not that you want even more work to do, but see if you can help out on a project that doesn’t normally fall into your role. It can give you a new perspective on your company. Or may even help you dust off some skills you haven’t used in a while.

3. Get feedback

You don’t have to wait until it’s review time to get feedback, nor does it have to be from your manager. Solicit your co-workers and ask them how you are doing, or if there is anything more you could do to help them out.

4. Make two lists

No one loves every part of their job. Write two lists, one of everything you truly enjoy doing at work and the other, tasks you don’t like, are tedious or difficult, or you simply don’t have the skills. Once you have your list see if there is anything on the tasks you don’t like that you can delegate. Even if you don’t have direct reports, perhaps outsourcing can be a solution. Then let yourself focus on the things you do like.

5. Look at things differently

Is there a process that works, but could be improved? Thinking about how to change things will push you to innovate and possibly help out the company. This could lead to positive feedback and help you get your mojo back.

Do you think you can love your job again? Or, did that list you made tell you that there just isn’t much left that you do like about your job? If your answer is yes to the latter, it may be time to start looking for other opportunities.
